What choosing VIKALP does
VIKALP requests consideration for an alternate service; it does not guarantee a berth. Check the option and offered trains in your official booking history. RailQ’s assistant cannot submit the preference or confirm an allocation. Read the linked IRCTC terms before selecting services.
Only select alternatives you can reach
Compare the exact departure station, date and arrival. A nearby station can still involve a long road transfer at a busy time. Write down the earliest time you can reach each alternative and the latest arrival you can accept. Remove choices that would miss an essential appointment.
After an alternate is allotted
Recheck the PNR and the allotted train, including any changed station. IRCTC’s terms say passengers given alternate accommodation must not board the original train. Follow the cancellation conditions for the alternate allocation rather than assuming the original waiting-list treatment continues.
A separate connection is a different plan
Booking two independent trains is not the same as receiving a VIKALP allocation. Work out the transfer yourself: scheduled gap, station change, platform access, luggage and delay margin. A short scheduled connection can become expensive if a missed train requires a fresh ticket or an overnight stay.
Keep a clear decision record
Before travel, put the final train, station, date and transport plan in one private note. Remove obsolete reminders so you do not act on the abandoned plan. Verify the final booking again before leaving for the station.
Low confirmation chances: compare alternatives in this order
Start with a different departure time, date or class on a direct service. Next compare nearby stations only if you can reach them comfortably. Then use the connecting-train planner for routes with one train change. Compare the whole journey: both ticket prices, station transport, waiting time and any overnight accommodation. A cheaper individual ticket can produce a more expensive or less practical overall trip.
Read a connection across midnight correctly
Illustrative timetable: the first train arrives on 20 October at 23:30 and the next leaves on 21 October at 02:15. The scheduled gap is 2 hours 45 minutes, not a negative interval. If the first train arrives 90 minutes late, only 75 minutes remain before the second train’s scheduled departure, before allowing for walking or a station change. This is an example, not an actual service or a recommended connection.
What the connecting planner does—and what it cannot promise
RailQ searches timetable options with up to one train change and displays the exact station codes, dates and scheduled gap. The minimum gap you select is your planning preference, not an official rule. Routes without complete timings or enough gap are omitted. A result does not confirm seats, reserve tickets or establish that you will catch the second train. Check live running separately near travel time.
Before paying for separate legs
Verify the available class and passenger status on both trains, and review the terms in the authorised booking service. RailQ does not link PNRs or create refund protection. Do not assume that two independently purchased tickets receive the same treatment as an officially linked connecting booking. If a delay causes a missed connection, contact the booking service or railway staff promptly for the applicable process and evidence requirements.
